Sobering Center:  Safe House

The Sobering Center is a new program to serve Alameda County adult residents who are suffering form the debilitating effects of alcohol and substance overuse and frequently co-occurring mental illness.  It is a 24/7 facility characterized as a “very safe place to sober up” where as many as 50 individuals can stay an average of four to six hours.  The goal will be to provide an environment in which inebriates can allow the effects of chemical intoxicants to abate and to regain their functionality.  There are EMTs on site at all times.

This Program is a consumer-oriented approach to working with people “where they are” rather than “where they should be”.  This is a “user friendly” service for substance overusers who have been assessed as appropriate for Safe House.  Access to the Program will be restricted to approved and authorized transport vehicles only.  No walk-ins or drop-offs will be accepted.

The new Sobering Center Services are provided by HIV Education And Prevention of Alameda County (HEPPAC) of Oakland CA.  Access to the new Sobering Center Services located on the Fairmont Hospital Campus is by an Intake Process developed by HEPPAC.  Services began in February 2008.  No walk-ins will be permitted.  Contact HEPPAC directly for additional information at www.casasegura.org or 510-434-0307.  Please see information sheet "Safe House" for details.
